The home quote form is a negotiation between friction and accuracy, and it usually loses both. Ask fewer questions and the customer completes the form but supplies less. Ask more and the drop-off rises while the answers get worse, because a person guessing at their wall construction or their year of build is not a reliable source. The property already has a factual position on record. The form just is not reading it.

Prefill turns that on its head. Resolve the address to a single property and the register can return the physical attributes that the customer was never well placed to describe: construction type, build-age band, floor area, bedroom count and the main heating system. Those arrive before the first question is asked, drawn from HM Land Registry and the EPC register rather than from memory.

Fourteen questions become four

The point of prefill is not simply speed, though a shorter form does convert better. It is that the questions you remove are the ones most likely to be answered incorrectly. A customer knows whether they have a burglar alarm and whether they have made a claim. They do not reliably know their floor area to the nearest square metre, and they certainly do not know their build-age band. Asking them anyway imports noise into the rating factors that follow.

Accuracy that survives to renewal

A concession is fair here. Prefill does not remove the need for a declaration, and the customer must still confirm what has been supplied on their behalf, because the register describes the property as last recorded, not necessarily as it stands today. That confirmation step is quick precisely because the heavy lifting is done.

What you gain is a book where the physical attributes were verified at inception rather than self-reported and never checked again. When you later re-score the book, the starting position is cleaner, so the drift you are measuring is genuine change in the property rather than the accumulated error of fourteen guesses made at three in the morning on a comparison site. Rebuild cost estimates built on a verified floor area hold up better under scrutiny too.

A shorter form is a nice outcome. A more accurate one is the reason to build it.
